Starbucks Barista Refers To Patron Wearing Trump T-Shirt As "Build A Wall"

Politics continues to permeate our daily lives, and that’s not exactly a positive development. While it’s outstanding that people are more engaged with political happenings these days, that has also led to political debate and rhetoric carrying over into situations in which it’s completely unnecessary.

For example, transacting business in a restaurant is not the time or the place for political discussion. That sentiment applies both ways.

Those that work in the restaurant should not have to be subjected to a political discussion with their customers, and customers should not feel as if they’re being preached to by the establishments they frequent. While that’s an incredibly simple concept, it has unfortunately become open to interpretation in today’s day and age.

Our latest example comes courtesy of a Starbucks restaurant in Dilworth, North Carolina.

As the Daily Mail explains, Kayla Hart walked into her local Starbucks, and she was wearing a t-shirt in support of President Donald Trump. She claims that the barista laughed in her face when she walked in the door, and it doesn’t sound like the visit got much better from that point.

Nonetheless, she placed her order for a venti green iced tea, but she was taken aback by what the receipt said.

It made reference to ‘build a wall,’ and Hart thought that was pretty uncalled for.

“I don't know what politics has to do with getting a cup of coffee. I just walked out because everyone was staring,” she explains. “I just found it really sad that I can't wear a t-shirt with our president without being made fun of.”

That is pretty sad, and it’s also unimaginable that a barista would take it upon themselves to poke fun at a customer. There’s no reason for that, regardless of what the topic may be.

Perhaps the local Starbucks missed a serious red flag with this barista during the hiring process, or perhaps it was the sight of a Trump t-shirt that pushed the barista over the edge.

That remains unclear, but it’s crystal clear Starbucks is not pleased about the situation - as you’ll notice from this handy statement from the corporate office.

“We failed to meet this customer's expectations of us, and we have apologized and are working directly with her to make it right. This experience is not consistent with our standards or the welcoming and respectful experience we aim to provide every customer who visits our stores,” the statement read. “We have spoken with our store partners about this situation and are using this as a coaching opportunity for the future.”

Kudos to Starbucks for getting ahead of the situation, and we’re confident that the company will make this a teachable moment for franchisees and store operators. However, it’s downright sad that the company has to take this step to make it a coaching opportunity.

There’s a little thing known as common sense that goes a long way when you’re tasked with interacting with the public. The barista did not exercise that, and the Starbucks corporation has received a black eye as a result. Hopefully, the political point was well worth it for this barista.
