Bizarre Appearance Of Former Baseball Star Sammy Sosa Draws Comparisons To King Of Pop

Former MLB slugger Sammy Sosa was a popular face of the game during his 18-year career, and his face is still receiving attention these days. However, it’s for completely different reasons than you would expect.

Sosa retired from the game back in 2007, and his appearance has undergone a startling transformation since that point.

As the Washington Post shares, Sosa first started to stand out during an appearance at a 2009 awards show. His skin was several shades lighter than it was during his playing days, and it was such a startling difference that there were legitimate concerns for his well-being.

Turns out it wasn’t due to a health issue, but his answer did little to quell the questions that were swirling about.

“It’s a bleaching cream that I apply before going to bed and whitens my skin some,” he said at the time. “It’s a cream that I have, that I use to soften [my skin], but has bleached me some. I’m not a racist, I live my life happily."

Comparisons to Michael Jackson were dished out with abandon. The King of Pop famously underwent his own startling transformation that included a lightening of his skin, so parallels were quickly drawn. Sosa would brush the comparisons aside as poppycock.

“What happened was that I had been using the cream for a long time and that, combined with the bright TV lights, made my face look whiter than it really is. I don’t think I look like Michael Jackson,” he said.

Fair enough, but if we fast forward to today, the transformation is downright mind blowing. Pictures have been making the rounds on social media, and they draw attention to the fact that the Sosa of today looks nothing like the slugger that struck fear in the hearts of opposing pitchers.

“They need to do a #30for30 on Sammy Sosa and not even talk about baseball,” read one post. "What if I told you that this guy...was also this guy..."

Beyond the appearance transformation, Sosa has also become estranged from the Chicago Cubs, an organization for which he played for 12 years. Even last year when the Cubs finally ended their World Series drought, Sosa was nowhere to be found.

“Look, if I don’t see it again, I’ll send my drone over there and I’ll watch it from my house. I won’t have to move,” he remarked in response to a question about whether he’d be interested in returning to Wrigley Field.

Sounds like the Cubs and Sosa aren’t headed towards a reconciliation anytime soon, but the club has some more pressing needs to tend to. The defense of their World Series crown is not off to a banner start, but the Cubs took a big step towards making some noise in the second half of the season by completing a blockbuster trade with the crosstown rival Chicago White Sox.

“In a shocking blockbuster trade between the two Chicago baseball teams, White Sox ace Jose Quintana was dealt to the Cubs in exchange for four prospects, headlined by the organization's two top prospects Eloy Jimenez, an outfielder, and Dylan Cease, a right-handed pitcher,” CSN Chicago reported.
