Son Makes Fun of Kids Who Wear Cheap Clothes, So Mom Teaches Him Lesson

Once kids hit their teens, looks often become a focal point. For some kids, they can take their preoccupation with appearances a little too far. They might start becoming addicted to designer labels, or might even make fun of kids who can't afford such expensive fashions.

When one mom sensed her 13-year-old son was sounding a bit 'entitled', she decided to quickly teach him a lesson he wouldn't forget. She sent him to Goodwill with $20 to buy a new wardrobe.

Cierra Brittany Forney wrote about the latest family episode on Facebook. She was shocked by the response that she got. She never expected her story to go viral, or for so many people to be interested in the little lesson she was trying to teach her son.

It all started when the Georgia teen started making 'snarky comments' about kids at school who shop at Goodwill. She also noted that he was acting like he was 'too good to shop at Walmart'.

"I don't tolerate that," said the mom. "Today, he took his own $20.00 to the Goodwill to buy clothes to wear the entire week to school. Whatever he found is what he would have to wear."

Forney noted that she didn't agree with her son's attitude. She loves shopping at Goodwill and has found some great bargains there. She also doesn't want her kids to grow up feeing entitled or looking down on those who aren't as lucky.

"I want to teach my kids that money isn't everything and if you have to degrade other people because of where they shop, then you too will shop there."

She says her son isn't happy at all about the 'punishment' that his mother imposed, but she believes he'll one day appreciate the lesson she is trying to teach him. She thinks 15 years from now he'll probably laugh about it.

The next day when Forney logged onto Facebook, she was overwhelmed by the responses she got-- most of which were very positive. Approximately 600,000 shares and hundreds of thousands of comments were waiting for her.

"With my daughter it was “don’t buy it at Kmart”. When she became an adult she would call me and tell me about something she bought at goodwill and tell me how much cheaper it was than Kmart," said one mom.

"My kids grew up with goodwill, yard sales Wal-Mart and a store we had here called Value City. I have picked up stuff at yard sales that is brand name barely worn... My husband and I both a disabled now so we do what we can," said another.

Some complained that Forney was just seeking attention with her post, and for allowing her son to develop the bad attitude in the first place. The mom took responsibility for her son's attitude, saying that she had been buying her kids brand-name clothes.

She didn't want to send the wrong message, which is why she enforced the Goodwill-only week. She never meant to get her 15 minutes of fame from the deal.

"I SOLELY did this to help my son become a better man," she explained in a follow-up post. "All the positive feedback and comments have brought me to tears and so have all the negative ones. My son has learned a valuable lesson from this AND my son is rockin' his button up shirt he bought from the Goodwill with PRIDE today!!!"
