Son of Fallen US Soldier Is Stunned When He's Given His Dad’s Old Car

On July 19, 2003, Army Lieutenant Jonathan David Rozier, 25, was killed after unexploded RPG munitions exploded near him during a patrol in Baghdad. Although the loss of Lt. Rozier was keenly felt by the soldiers that knew and served with him, their grief couldn’t match the sense of loss felt by Rozier’s wife, Jessica Johns, and her infant son, Justin.

When she found out that her husband had been killed in action, Mrs. Johns suppressed the urge to breakdown and forced herself to assess her options. Unfortunately, some of the most pressing decisions facing Mrs. Johns concerned her impending financial obligations.

To make sure she had enough money to pay for Justin’s daycare, Mrs. Johns made the difficult decision to sell her husband’s beloved black Toyota Celica convertible.

"I didn't want to keep chipping away at my savings to pay for a car that nobody was using," she said during an interview with NBC News. "It was just sitting in my driveway." For the next decade, Mrs. Johns tried to be the best mother possible, throwing herself into any work or parenting related task.

However, Mrs. Johns couldn’t help but remember the Toyota Celica when she recently stumbled across the car’s old registration number. Fortunately, the discovery gave Mrs. Johns a truly heartwarming idea.

At the time that Mrs. Johns found the car registration, her son, who was 15 years old at the time, was just starting to talk about getting his driver’s license when he turned 16.

Mrs. Johns knew that giving her late husband’s car to her son would be the perfect way to celebrate this important life milestone and pay tribute to Justin’s father. After writing a passionate post for information, Mrs. John received a reply from the daughter of the car’s new owner, who told him her father’s contact details.

"I wonder if this car is still out there? I was thinking I would go on a years-long search to find this car," said Mrs. Johns.

Mrs. Johns knew that her best chance at finding the car was to use social media. "If I call and he doesn't want to sell it then my hopes would be crushed," Johns said. "It took me 12 hours to get the courage to call him."

After calling the car’s current owner, and explaining her plan to gift it to a fallen soldier’s son, the man on the end of the phone told Mrs. Johns that he had to think about what she was asking him to do.

However, an hour after saying this, the man rang back Mrs. Johns and said: “I think that your son will get more enjoyment out of having his dad's car than I would.”

Mrs. Johns later appealed to ‘Follow the Flag’ to help raise funds for transporting and refurbishing her husband’s old car. Unsurprisingly, when Justin realized what his mom had done for him, he was absolutely lost for words.

"I was waiting for him, for it to click that's dad's car," Mrs. Johns recalled. "He starts looking at it, gets in, he looks so much like his dad."
