Smiling Criminal Makes Sick 3-Word Statement After Shooting Officer, Judge Has Perfect Response
In Oregon City, Oregon, a man is going to spend the next three decades behind bars after making a deal with prosecutors. The judge tacked an additional month onto the sentence because the man used profanity in court the day of his sentencing.
Jeffrey Giddings, 45, was riding his bike last August when he was approached by officers. Giddings has a long criminal history and there was a warrant out for his arrest because he 'absconded' from the Seattle Residential Reentry Management program.
Giddings, who prosecutors have described as an 'armed career criminal', suddenly and unexpectedly open fired on police officers. One bullet struck Sergeant Lee Jundt, who was wearing a ballistics vest.
Giddings then fled to a nearby Subway and took an employee hostage. Liz Mincer's life hung in the balance as Giddings exchanged fire with police. He was finally captured when SWAT officers arrived on the scene.
Jundt and Mincer both survived, but they're both haunted by the incident to this day.
“You, Mr. Giddings, are a coward and a selfish individual, beyond comparison. May you be in torment for the rest of your life,” Officer Jundt said, addressing Giddings in court. “I forgive you for your actions that day, but rest assured, I will never forget.”
“I have my good days and bad days,” Mincer said outside of the courthouse to KPTV news reporters. “He changed me. He changed my life.”
Giddings apologized for the incident to Mincer. “I just want to say I am truly sorry for the mental anguish I put you through,” he said to his victim. “I feel real bad for what I did to you and I think about it every day. I hope you can forgive me.”
The career criminal showed no remorse, however, towards Jundt. He tells the officer, "And Jundt, I ain’t (sic) no coward... If I was a coward, I would’ve just stopped and gave you guys my pistol.”
“I’m actually very glad he got what he deserved,” Mincer said. “Of course, I wish he could’ve gotten more. 30 years, his life will be over.”
