A Simple Cut Nearly Causes This Woman To Die From Deadly Infection

Donna Corden, a 45-year-old mother of three children, was nearly killed after she was exposed to necrotic bacteria that ate into her face and shut down her internal organs.

Ms. Cordern, from Leeds, England, was working in the kitchen when she slipped and fell. Ms. Cordern split open the skin on her eyebrow and caused a nasty open wound to form. However, when she inspected her face in the mirror, Ms. Cordern saw that the cut wasn’t serious, saying: “After I’d fallen my doctor put a few butterfly stitches across it. He was sure I’d be fine but sent me to the hospital for an x-ray to be on the safe side. The results were all clear so I went home to rest.”

However, Ms. Cordern was unaware that the open wound on her face had allowed flesh-eating bacteria to seep into her body. These bacteria can lead to a life-threatening infection, known as necrotising fasciitis.

The day after Ms. Cordern returned from her doctor, she started feeling dizzy and nauseous as her face became swollen and red. Ms. Cordern’s 26-year-old daughter, Jadye, quickly called an ambulance.

When paramedics arrived, they were stunned by Ms. Cordern’s life-threatening condition, promptly transporting the woman to Leeds General Infirmary.

The resilient mother was still not sure what was happening to her body and thought she was sick from a stomach illness, saying: “I was still convinced I was fine and had a tummy bug, but as the hours passed I’d never felt so ill.”

As Ms. Cordern lost consciousness, she was taken to the intensive care unit, telling FOX News that “The doctors told me I had a very dangerous infection, but by this time I was drifting in and out of consciousness.” Doctors quickly realized that Ms. Cordern’s cut had become infected, spreading into her bloodstream and affecting her internal organs and skin.

Horrifyingly, Ms. Cordern’s infection also resulted in another complication; the onset of sepsis, also known as blood poisoning. Consequently, doctors had to fight to keep Ms. Cordern alive as her kidney and heart repeatedly shut down, leading to a 4-day coma.

Due to the tremendous talent and determination of medical staff, Ms. Cordern woke up from the coma, alive but scarred from the infection. Doctors were able to repair a lot of the damage to the mother’s face and save her eye, but she will still need another year of reconstructive surgery.

As a result of the tragic incident, Ms. Cordern has committed to raising awareness about the dangerous infection and is grateful to have survived, saying: “I’ll never look the same again, but I’m lucky to be alive, that’s what matters more than anything.”
