Sheriff's Department Investigating Photo of Teens Stomping on American Flag

On Saturday, a male and female student posted a photo to Facebook that shows them stomping on the American flag and showing the bird. It was taken inside a Richland Township classroom in Pennsylvania.

Both the Richland Township School District and police department are now looking into it. Although, legal experts say the students have not committed a crime--as students cannot be punished by law for sending an offensive message.

A legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania told WJAC, "The Supreme Court made it clear that using the flag as part of a protest, even burning a flag, is protected by the First Amendment. There could not be criminal charges brought against the students."

The photo has since been shared thousands of times. Mindy Wadsworth, a Richland township parent said, "I thought it was disrespectful. It definitely wasn't a representation of what Richland school district is. As a parent of a Richland student, I hope that's not how I would hope my child would act."

The Richland Township Police Department said in a statement, "We have been in contact with the Richland School District and will work with them in resolving this issue. Thank you to everyone who took time to notify us of this situation."
