Server In Trouble For Labeling Couple

Arainia Brown and her boyfriend Rolman Sparkman had been traveling back to Austin when they decided to pick up food to go from the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) on I-35. This was a decision they would soon regret once they got their receipt.

They were helped by a young black server who put in their to-go order. Before they left the restaurant, they noticed the words "BLACK PPL" on their receipt, stirring their emotions. They were offended that a black server had the nerve to label them "BLACK PPL."

Rolman said, “This is not a joke. It’s very serious and it hurt a lot of people’s feelings.” Arainia said, “I feel upset, I’m sad, I’m angry. Like this, it makes no sense. You could have asked me my name. Don’t put, don’t label me. I don’t label you.” Although, the couple never said anything to anyone at the restaurant. They waited until they got home to tell friends and family. IHOP Corporate heard about the incident and released this statement:

"This was a poor choice made by our franchisee’s team member, and is not in keeping with policies and procedures. We recognize that it could be offensive and apologize. Everyone is welcome in our restaurants and our franchisee is using this as a teachable moment for the entire team so that it will not reoccur."

In addition, the server Dwayne Williams posted on Facebook, “A slip up by me in a rush to get to-go orders to guests should not be held against an entire establishment. In my rush to put in to-go orders and tend to my tables, I forgot to get a name for the two couples’ order. I apologize if I offended anyone because that wasn’t my intention.”
