Security Guard Finds Discarded Diamonds Worth Millions

A Midtown jewelry store recently reported almost $5 million in diamonds went missing.

It was soon discovered that some employees of J. Birnbach Inc., were assisting their boss with moving to another floor when they threw three weathered wooden boxes, filled with diamonds, in a mound of trash. They did not bother to check the contents.

On the third floor, a building security guard did notice and found the pricey gems, including one worth $3.2 million. Wilfred Martinez, 47, sold some of his finds to a jeweler in the same building. Although he did not sell the crown jewel of the collection, the 17-carat diamond worth $3.2 million.

He turned that piece over to police along with two smaller diamonds and $10,000 in cash.
