The Secret Service Is Reportedly Investigating Kathy Griffin's Donald Trump Decapitation Photo

Comedian Kathy Griffin has expressed regret for posing for a picture while holding what appeared to be the bloody, decapitated head of President Trump.

However, her apology may not be good enough for the U.S. Secret Service. Breitbart News reported that the agency told TMZ it had begun an investigation of “the circumstances surrounding the photo shoot.” Federal agents tweeted Tuesday: “On it! @SecretService has a robust protective intelligence division that monitors open source reporting & social media to evaluate threats. Threats made against @SecretService protectees receive the highest priority of all of our investigations.” In a subsequent message, the agency proclaimed: “#ProtectionNeverRests.”

ABC News reported that a more detailed explanation came Tuesday night. “The U.S. Secret Service has a critical mission. It is always unfortunate when people make statements that could be perceived as threats,” the agency wrote. “We don’t have the luxury of knowing a person’s intent. Each alleged or perceived threat has to be investigated thoroughly, which taxes Secret Service manpower and resources that could be utilized elsewhere.”

Griffin’s dubious attempt at humor has sparked demands on social media for a boycott of her appearances on an upcoming national tour. The comedian lost her job on CNN’s New Year’s Eve show, which she has co-hosted for a decade. One of the television network’s hosts, Anderson Cooper, tweeted Tuesday: “For the record, I am appalled by the photo shoot Kathy Griffin took part in. It is clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate.”

The comedian “should be ashamed of herself,” President Trump wrote on Twitter. He said the photo upset his 11-year-old son, Barron, as well as his adult children. The president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., described the photo as “disgusting but not surprising.” He added: “This is the left today. They consider this acceptable. Imagine (if) a conservative did this to Obama as POTUS.” Even Chelsea Clinton expressed outrage, calling the image “vile and wrong.” She tweeted: “It is never funny to joke about killing a president.”

Griffin did not immediately apologize. Her first response to the backlash against her was to tweet that she does “not condone ANY violence.” The star of “My Life on the D-List” argued that she was “merely mocking the Mocker in Chief.” Later, she posted a video in which she proclaimed: “I sincerely apologize. I am just now seeing the reaction of these images. I ask your forgiveness. Taking down the image. Going to ask the photographer to take down the image.”

The comedian explained: “I’m a comic. I cross the line. I move the line, then I cross it. I went way too far. The image is too disturbing. I understand how it offends people. It wasn’t funny. I get it. I beg for your forgiveness. I went too far. I made a mistake and I was wrong.” Breitbart reported that Griffin did not apologize to Trump or his family. According to CNN, she told a friend: “We have to move to Mexico today, but we’re going to go to prison - federal prison. … We’re not surviving this, OK?”
