School Suspends 9-Year-Old Boy for Refusing To Take Off Trump Cap

It looks like the rancorous politics of this U.S. election cycle have even percolated down to the level of elementary schools.

Nine-year-old Logan Autry is a typical nine-year-old boy in most ways, with the exception of his strongly held political beliefs. Logan has been banned from his last week of school this year for standing up for his First Amendment rights and refusing to take off a cap that shows his support for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Logan was told by the administration at his school to remove his hat last Thursday, but Logan refused as the cap did not have a vulgar or violent message. At that point his parents were called to pick him up. They were told that he had to leave the Powers-Ginsburg Elementary School because of safety concerns relating to controversy surrounding his red “Make America Great Again” hat (reputedly signed by Trump himself). This despite the fact he had worn the same cap to school for several consecutive days.

Logan has said he will not change his mind and take off his cap, so he will not be allowed to attend his last week of classes this year.

The Fresno School District released a statement explaining why they decided to suspend Logan for his refusal to take off the controversial cap:

“Our job as educators is to facilitate a safe learning environment where we encourage robust conversations of diverse and thoughts. We are proud that in this case, our school achieved that goal by allowing the student to wear his hat for several days. However, it is also our responsibility to take precautions when the discourse begins to impact our school climate and interrupt school operations.”
