School Says Teen's Breasts Show Through Shirt, She Says They're Lying - Who's Right?

A high school student said she was called into the principal's office for a surprising reason: a dress code violation. Since the student was covered up, she didn't understand what the fuss was about. Apparently, the fuss was over something she wasn't wearing: a bra. Many felt that the demand for the student to put on a bra crossed the line.

Principal Steve Thennis, of Helena High School in Montana, called Kaitlyn Juvik into his office after he received a complaint from someone at the school. He told the teen that she was violating the school dress code by not wearing a bra.

Juvik says the principal explained that someone was 'uncomfortable' with the way she was dressed. While the girl admits she wasn't wearing a bra, she doesn't see why that's her problem. “What I was confronted about was wrong ... As long as nothing is showing and you’re covered up, girls should not have to wear a bra,” she told MTN News.

Juvik's mother, Tami, posted in support of her daughter on the KXLH Facebook page after the media picked up the story. "I stand behind my daughter 100%! I am very proud of the point she is trying to make and the movement that she and her friends have created. This movement is not just about wearing/not wearing a bra. Our daughters are body shamed and sexualized on a daily basis. We need to teach them to be comfortable in their own skin and not feel like they have to hide under their clothes. The schools have bigger fish to fry than worrying about whether or not my daughter is wearing a bra! Ask your daughters if they wear a bra on a regular basis, I think you will be surprised by the answer!"

Before you knew it, a protest was organized outside of the school on Friday. Students created a Facebook page called 'No Bra, No Problem'. Hundreds of students joined and showed support for Juvik, and the right of women to go braless.

According to protesters, the Helena High School student handbook does not say anything about requirements to wear undergarments. The students argued that Juvik shouldn't have been asked to change.

“The fact that I was told it makes people uncomfortable offended me because it’s my body,” Juvik said to reporters in the protest outside the school Friday. “It is my natural body and I’m not sure why that is uncomfortable to somebody.”

Students plan to continue the protest on Tuesday, with male students showing up at the school wearing bras outside of their shirts. Principal Thennis said he has a bra all picked out for the occasion.

“I’m not going to check student’s undergarments,” Thennis said. “We are going to ask them to dress appropriately and if we feel it is inappropriate, male or female, we are going to ask them to cover up.”
