School Officials Toss Boy’s Lunch - Here’s Why

A mom in Tulsa is fuming after she heard that her teen son's school took his lunch from him because he owed $3. They proceeded to waste the meal by throwing it out.

The anonymous mother said the school could have sent home a note instead of embarrassing her son and letting him go hungry. "I don't think that if he forgets his money one day, it should just be 'no, you can't eat,'" she said in an interview with KRMG.

Tulsa public school spokesperson Chris Payne says the schools attempt to teach students responsibility at the high school level by requiring them to pay for lunch. Students in high school are not allowed to charge meals.

"In the real world if you don't have your money and you go to McDonald's, they're not going to serve you," Payne told KRMG.

The student in question had his tray taken away and his lunch thrown in the garbage. Wasting food is not a good example for students either, and the mother thought that the situation could have been handled better.
