School Nurse Gives Student Shot, Realizes Mistake After

A North Texas family wants to know why their daughter was injected with the wrong medication at Beltline Elementary School in Lancaster.

“She got the medicine out of the black bag and took the top off, and the needle was a little long, and that's why I started crying, because I've never gotten medicine at the school before, and the needle was big,” the 7-year-old said.

Karmani’s mother took a photo of the medicine her daughter was injected with, which had a different kid’s name on it. Her daughter recalled the terrifying experience saying, “I was feeling shaky and sweaty,” she said. “Scared and sleepy…I got up and told my teacher."

Her teacher took Karmani’s blood sugar and told her to eat a peppermint and drink two juices with some crackers, then she called the school nurse to tell her she gave the student the wrong medicine.

“She seemed upset."

When Ford’s grandparents arrived and asked for an ambulance they were told, “It's not necessary” and “it costs money."

“It could have taken another turn, and I feel like they were trying to sweep it under the rug and not call paramedics,” Grandfather Gregory Allen said.

Allen says the incident is more than human error, and FOX 4 did not get a response when they asked the school why a teacher was administering medication instead of the nurse.
