School District's Bizarre Ban Has Cheerleaders Furious

The Tampa Bay Tech cheerleaders wanted to wear pink uniforms in October to represent multiple family members and a school staff member who survived breast cancer.

They had planned for the uniforms since 2014 where they started fundraising to cover the cost of the new uniforms at $100 each for the 18-person squad. Yet, when school officials found out that the girls had successfully earned the pink uniforms through their fundraising efforts, a spokesperson for Hillsborough County Schools quickly put an end to it.

Tanya Arja from the district cited the issue as the girls creating an unfair playing field for less-advantaged students at other schools who couldn’t afford alternative uniforms. Despite the fact that other students could raise funds, as well, the district didn't want anyone to feel bad about their finances.

Arja said, “We want to make sure that all of our schools have the same playing field, and so if there are any uniforms out there that a school might want or a team might want, we just ask them to go through the approval process."

She said the team didn't get the necessary approval. Yet, the students raised the funds for the uniforms--their parents didn't pay for it.
