School Claims Girl's Outfit Inappropriate - Do You Have A Problem With It?

In what seems to be an increasingly common trend, a school has entered the spotlight for claiming a student's outfit was inappropriate.

Tony Alarcon was appalled when his daughter was chastised and forced to change outfits twice in one day because teachers deemed her attire too distracting for male students. Mr. Alarcon is fighting to change the dress code at Fisher Middle School in Los Gatos after his daughter, 13-year-old Demetra, was told to change out of a blue romper because it was ‘too short’. Despite bringing her a whole new outfit to school, Mr. Alarcon’s daughter was asked to change again.

Mr. Alarcon and his daughter, Demetra, are fighting to rewrite the Fisher Middle School dress code after Demetra was forced to change outfits twice because her outfits were ‘distracting for her male peers’. After Demetra was told to change out of her blue romper, Mr. Alarcon brought her a tank top and a pair of denim shorts to wear instead. Unfortunately, this still wasn’t enough for staff at Fisher Middle School, who again told Demetra her shorts were too short.

“I was told the shorts weren’t appropriate,” Mr. Alarcon stated. “I had to go back into the car, where I luckily had a pair of leggings as a backup.” Frustrated at his daughter’s school, Mr. Alarcon took to Facebook to discuss the issue with other parents. With temperatures hitting 90 degrees on the day of the incident, Demetra was “wearing leggings because she doesn’t want to be dress-coded for wearing shorts,” Mr. Alarcon complained, gaining support from dozens of other parents who agreed on the matter.

After taking a closer look at the school’s dress code, Mr. Alarcon noticed that the schools dress code policy, which is clothing specific, mostly mentioned “women’s clothing like halter tops [and] spaghetti straps.” While the code supposedly prohibits male students from wearing specific kinds of hats, Demetra affirms that she has never seen a male peer be reprimanded.

Mr. Alarcon went even further with his argument, pointing out the unreasonable expectation to find girls shorts specifically tailored to the school’s dress code. “The only stores that sell longer shorts are Sears and Lands End,” Mr. Alarcon stated. With next to no dress code rules being enforced on male student, Mr. Alarcon has expressed his concerns that the dress code is having a negative impact on female students at the middle school.

“We have to have dress codes that are fair and reasonable and don’t cause them emotional issues - cause them to question their bodies or feel like they’re sex symbols at 13-years-old. Because they’re not. They’re just kids,” Mr. Alarcon concluded.

Diana G. Abbati, the Los Gatos School District Superintendent, refused to comment on the matter; however, she did release a statement regarding student dress codes. “Students are expected to wear clothing that are suitable for the school activities in which they participate.”

While no permanent changes have been made to the dress code thus far, Ms. Abbati has told parents they should expect an answer soon as to whether anything will change. As Demetra’s story spreads further, it will be interesting to see how the school reacts when a viral spotlight is shined on its dress code.
