School Bans Holidays 'Not Required by Law'

Principal Scott Masini banned Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas at Bruce Vento Elementary. The school is 63 percent Asian-American, 24 percent African-American, 10 percent Hispanic American and 4 percent Caucasian American. He says he wants to honor the diversity of its student population.

In a letter, sent to parents, he wrote, "My personal feeling is we need to find a way to honor and engage in holidays that are inclusive of our student population."

He did acknowledge that his decision would be unpopular. In 2008, the school district implemented a policy that discouraged festivities not "required by law."

Masini has served as the principal since 2013. He also says he was worried the celebrations may be "encroaching on the educational opportunities of others and threatening the culture of tolerance and respect for all."

Some parents left comments saying the move was "totally ridiculous" and "very sad." In contrast, other parents supported the "sensitive" decision. Masini's letter was shared on an invite-only Facebook page.

The Saint Paul School District is one of the most diverse in Minnesota with 100 languages and dialects spoken by 37,000 students.
