Sandra Bullock Drops Truth Bomb Before Donating $1 Million To Hurricane Relief

Hurricane Harvey has wreaked havoc in Houston, leaving residents little time to gather their possessions and even less time to flee to higher ground. With flood waters expected to continue rising, 30,000 residents and their pets have been left temporarily homeless and at least seven people have lost their lives. In the midst of the tragedy, celebrities such as Sandra Bullock, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Kevin Hart have pledged millions of dollars in order to assist in the eventual recovery of those affected.

Hurricane Harvey has been described as an “800-year flood level” by experts and is expected to remain over the Gulf Coast of Houston for the next two days. This extraordinary hurricane has left a trail of destruction and devastation in its wake, leaving thousands of people and animals homeless and hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. Another 38-64 centimeters of rain is expected to fall before the end of the storm.

This horrific natural disaster, evoking the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, has seen a tremendous response from the American people and even the Commander-in-Chief has been seen on the ground. Texas Governor, Greg Abbott was quick to call all 12,000 members of the Texas National Guard, who, alongside emergency services, have been tirelessly working on the ongoing rescue effort.

President Trump has declared the worst affected areas of Texas and Louisiana as disaster zones and federal relief efforts are already being routed to the worst-hit locations: "We're dealing with Congress. As you know it's going to be a very expensive situation.”

Thankfully for the displaced residents of Texas and Louisiana, some very generous celebrities have donated huge sums of money to help aid the relief effort. Acclaimed actor and climate change activist, Leonardo DiCaprio, has pledged a whopping $1 million dollars to the relief effort, while Sandra Bullock, also an actress, has pledged the same. Comedian Kevin Hart, The Kardashians, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Brown and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson were also amongst those who generously donated.

"It's times like this when we do receive such an incredible amount of support. Especially during times of disaster, people see what's happening in Texas and our hearts all go out to them,” Elizabeth Penniman, Vice President of the American Red Cross communications, stated. "Having someone like Sandra Bullock make this kind of commitment, it helps bring people together and open their hearts and be even more generous," she added.

‘The Rock’ had a heartfelt message to send to the residents of Houston, emphasizing that “…you've got to stay strong and you've got to hold on to faith,” while Texas-based actor Jensen Ackles expressed his concern for those affected, particularly his own family: “thoughts and prayers to everyone getting hit by hurricane Harvey...Including my wife and children. I wish I was down there and helping people and pulling people off of roofs in a boat right now but I'm not. This is what I can do."
