Sammy Sosa Looks Different These Days And Fans Aren't Sure How To Feel About It

If you haven't seen recent photos of baseball legend Sammy Sosa lately, you might want to brace yourself. It's not that the 48-year-old isn't looking good; he is. He's just looking unusually white. As in, Caucasian. Many are wondering what gives, but Sosa unabashedly admits he has been lightening his skin.

Sosa has been accused of following the trail blazed by late King of Pop Michael Jackson. Just like with Jackson, photos of Sosa through the years show his complexion getting lighter and lighter with the passage of time.

Many speculated about what's going on. Jackson claimed he was suffering from the skin condition vitiligo, which results in patches of skin getting lighter. Many have doubted Jackson's story because, unlike other vitiligo sufferers, Jackson's overall appearance was becoming lighter rather than just random patches.

But some wonder if Jackson was telling the truth, could Sosa be suffering from the same condition? The Dominican Republic native once sported rich, gorgeous, chocolate brown skin.

Compare pictures from the 1990s to today, and Sosa looks like he's died and come back as a ghost. His pasty-white appearance looks sickly and unhealthy, and the baseball player looks like he's well on his way to becoming transparent.

Sosa claims to have a reasonable explanation for his skin color: he bleaches it. At least he admits it.

According to Sosa, he'd been using a bleaching skin cream for ages. “What happened was that I had been using the cream for a long time and that, combined with the bright TV lights, made my face look whiter than it really is. I don’t think I look like Michael Jackson,” he told ESPN.

Sosa hasn't said he deliberately set out to lighten his skin, but he doesn't seem to care that it's the outcome of his favorite moisturizer. "I'm not a racist, I live my life happily."

One Twitter user commented something that a lot of people had been wondering. “This is what self-hate looks like," she said in a comment under side-by-side photos of Sosa. One was from then, and one is from now.

"It's sad that the emotional pain Sammy Sosa feels about being black is so sharp he was willing to endure bleaching himself pink," said another.

"I don't know what Sammy Sosa is going through, but the most important lesson I've learned in life is to love yourself for who you are," another Twitter user said.

According to the latest reports by Global Industry Analysts, skin lighteners are a booming business. The industry is expected to shoot up from $10 billion in 2015 to $31 billion in 2024.

According to the report, sales are 'driven by the still rampant dark skin stigma and rigid cultural perception that correlates lighter skin tone with beauty, cultural refinement, and personal success in several communities in Asia, the Middle East, & Africa'.

Sosa seems very happy with himself, and maybe people shouldn't judge. But Sosa should know that the people who care about him really don’t care about the color of his skin.
