Rodrigo Duterte Fires Back After Chelsea Clinton Criticizes His Distasteful Rape Joke

When you get into a verbal spat with someone, there’s always a chance that things can escalate rather quickly. Before you know it, a good old-fashioned game of who can throw the best barb ensues, and some folks have absolutely no problem taking the gloves off right away. As the Daily Mail shares, that’s what happened after Chelsea Clinton shared some thoughts about Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte, who would proceed to throw a vicious jab that has undoubtedly left a mark.

Philippines troops are locked in battle with ISIS fighters in the southern city of Marawi, and that has led Duterte to declare martial law across the entire southern region of Mindanao. After doing so, he addressed his troops in a speech, and he used some incredibly curious phrasing while attempting to inspire them.

“For this martial law and the consequences of martial law and the ramifications of martial law, I and I alone would be responsible,” he said. “Just do your work. I will handle the rest. I will be imprisoned for you. If you rape three (women), I will say that I did it.”

Duterte’s remarks were immediately condemned by a whole host of observers, including Chelsea Clinton, who took to social media to offer up her thoughts.

“Not funny. Ever,” she wrote. “Duterte is a murderous thug with no regard for human rights. It's important to keep pointing that out and that rape is never a joke.”

Duterte attempted to explain that he was being sarcastic, but few people got the joke. There’s nothing funny about sexual assault, and he was slammed as a result of it. However, he still attempted to provide some more context for his remarks.

“It is a crime actually committed by soldiers, mostly Americans in Okinawa,” he said. “But, we never heard of a Filipino. But I am just warning them that anything they do, I have to answer for it. I take full responsibility for your foolishness. I speak sarcastically."

That’s some pretty head-scratching reasoning for the remarks, but the matter may have died from that point if he left it alone. He didn’t. Duterte made it clear that Clinton’s remark had gotten under his skin, and offered up a question for her in response.

“You Americans, like Chelsea, be careful because you live in a glass house,” he said. “I repeat, when President Clinton was f****ng Lewinsky, what was your statement or your reaction?”

To recap, Duterte explained why he crossed the line with his remarks by leaping over the line once more for good measure. While his barb directed in Clinton’s direction certainly generated a few chuckles, it’s an incredibly bad look for the leader of a nation to be engaged in such childish insults. Duterte has never been known for biting his tongue, but he’s managed to attempt to joke about rape and slap Clinton around about her father’s sexual mischievousness, and there’s really no justification for either one.

Perhaps a warm beverage and some quiet moments of reflection will help Duterte settle down a bit, as it sounds like he has greater problems afoot in his country than working on his standup routine.
