Richland High School Students Proudly Wave American Flag After Photo Shows Students Stepping on It

On Feb. 17, Richland High School opened to a parade of demonstrators with American flags walking around the campus. This was in response to a Facebook image showing two Jonestown, Pennsylvania students standing on the flag.

Spencer Malinish, a Richland student who wore a red-white-and-blue hoodie during the demonstration, told the Tribune-Democrat, “We’re just here to show that Richland does support the troops … and two kids can’t destroy the reputation of a beautiful school like we have." Arnold Nadonley, the Richland School District Superintendent, told the Tribune-Democrat “I want to thank them for doing it with class and good demeanor. And I think that is representative of Richland School District."

It was on Feb. 13 that an image was posted to social media showing two students posing with the U.S. flag in a classroom. One student smiled, while the other flipped the bird in the direction of the camera. The student seen standing on the flag has since apologized, saying the decision was "dumb" and impulsive. The image had already went viral.

Ryan Skovensky, a Richland senior, said, “[Comments] about one bad picture have a lot of people making us look stupid. That’s not what we’re about.” After the demonstration, Richland Police Chief Michael Burgan said “Everyone made it to school OK. It was a quiet morning. But it was better to be safe than sorry.”

Brandon Bailey, the principal of Richland High, wrote online “We need to remember that great adversity often leads to great opportunity. We need to unify and use this opportunity to show to the world that the Richland School District has some of the finest students, faculty and staff in our great nation.”
