Retiree Falls Victim To Online Scam, Loses It All

Catherine Short, 71, was looking for love so she decided to sign up with ChristianMingle.com. There, she met someone who she felt was a match.

Her new love interest told her he eventually wanted to get married. In addition, he promised her a gold ring with her name spelled out in diamonds. They had communicated for months and never met. Soon, he started asking her to buy him expensive gadgets. He claimed they were for underprivileged kids.

He also asked for money to pay for a hospital bill. The victim's family members told her she was being scammed, but she didn't want to believe it.

Short said, "I am a trusting person and it takes a lot for me to see that someone could hurt somebody at my age." Short eventually ended up selling her Largo, Pinellas County, home before wiring her online paramour $185,000--it was all the money she had. She never heard from him again.

Police say they may never be able to track him again. Short is now desperately trying to find a job "to make ends meet."

Sgt. John Spoor said that once fraudsters capture their target’s heart, they "go for the pocket." He added, "If it's too good to be true, it probably is. Do your diligence, contact the sheriff's office. Speak with your family members and use all the resources you can to prevent this from happening."
