Retail Store Manager Saves Toddler

On a 100-degree day, Sarah Oropeza, the manager of the Famous Footwear in Merriam, Kansas was completing a customer sale when a co-worker ran into the store yelling for help--she had just noticed a little girl in a car. Oropeza told KCTV that the windows were completely rolled up, as the little girl was covered in sweat. Oropeza, a mother of two, noticed that the little girl tried to pull her hair back as she was covered in sweat. Oropeza started by trying to break into the car with no success.

Then, a woman handed her a screwdriver she found in her trunk--which, didn't work. After that, Oropeza was handed a tire iron that did successfully smash the window. Oropeza said she was praying she could break the window. Oropeza and a group of other women were about the pull the two-year-old girl out of the hot car. Her shoes and socks were drenched in sweat. An ambulance arrived at the scene to attend to the girl, and a police officer offered to buy diapers since there was no diaper bag in the car.

The girl was later picked up by her godmother. A couple, thought to be her aunt and uncle, came later to look for her and were charged with endangerment. Oropeza said they appeared mostly worried about who would pay for damage to the car window.
