Restaurant Offers Up Food For Thought When Muslim Complains About Bacon Sign

The Sneakers Bistro restaurant in Winooski, Vermont is a local hot spot that was attempting to drum up a little extra interest. The restaurant placed a catchy sign up to help draw in a crowd, but at least one member of the community took umbrage with it. As I Have Truth explains, a Muslim woman started a controversy over the sign on an online forum because the sign used the word ‘bacon.’

The sign was placed by a crosswalk near the restaurant, and it was a catchy play on words that served its purpose of capturing attention.

“Yield for Sneakers Bacon,” the sign read.

Not all of the attention was positive, as a disgruntled Muslim woman found it to be offensive.

“Given the large number of Muslim families in Winooski, as well as many others who do not eat pork for a variety of reasons, it seems unnecessary for this insensitive business sign to be at the city’s main crosswalk,” she wrote on an online forum.

Out of a desire not to create any trouble within the community, the owner took the sign down to avoid having it become a lightning rod for debate. However, the owner would take to social media to serve up some interesting food for thought that everyone should take a moment to digest.

“We are here to serve people breakfast, not politics. We removed the sign that was located on public property as a gesture of respect to our diverse community. There were also concerns raised about safety. Removing it was not a difficult decision. We still love bacon. We still love eggs. Please have the political conversation elsewhere,” the owner shared.

The owner is right on the money. Not everything in the world has to be about politics or some other endless debate. If something is truly inflammatory or hateful then it deserves to be addressed, but a debate on religion and beliefs was the furthest thing from the owner's mind when the sign was put up.
