Restaurant Manager Fired for Refusing to Serve Trump Supporter; Says He Has 'No Regrets'

A Canadian restaurant manager was working one day when a person came in wearing a red 'MAGA' hat. The hats are popular accessories for American supporters of President Donald Trump, whose campaign slogan was 'Make America Great Again'. The manager refused to serve the Trump supporter, and was subsequently fired from his job. He seems okay with that.

Darin Hodge was working at Stanley Park Teahouse in Vancouver when a customer walked in Thursday wearing the controversial hat. Hodge asked the customer to remove the cap, but the customer refused. The customer asserted his right to wear the hat. The two got into an argument and Hodge ultimately refused service to the man.

“A gentleman came in wearing a hat that was a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat, and our manager went up to the gentleman and asked him to take off his hat, that he wouldn’t serve him with that hat on,” confirmed Eva Gates, a spokesperson for the restaurant. “And the gentleman said that he had a right to wear that hat. And [the manager] refused to serve him if he wouldn’t take off his hat, and so the customer had to leave.”

Two days later, Hodge found himself unemployed. Sequoia Group of Restaurants, which owns the Teahouse, said that the manager violated the company's 'philosophy of tolerance'.

“Sequoia does not support intolerance of any kind, and it is because of these principles that we cannot discriminate against someone based on their support for the current administration in the United States or any other bona fide political party,” said a statement from the company.

Hodges isn't backing down, because the former manager believes that tolerance is what it's all about. “I stand by my decision to ask the patron to remove his hat,” he told Global News. "“The MAGA hat has come to symbolize racism, bigotry, islamophobia, misogyny, white supremacy, homophobia. As a person with a strong moral backbone, I had to take a stand against this guest’s choice of headwear while in my former place of work. Absolutely no regrets.”

People supporting Trump, or associated with him, have been getting a lot of backlash from those who are against the current POTUS. A New York City bar owner kicked out a man wearing a MAGA hat, and ended up winning his case in court. A judge ruled that it is legal to refuse service to people based on their political opinions because politics are not protected like religion.

Another young Trump supporter in Virginia went to a cookout restaurant with her younger cousins. The teens went to the walk-up window after attending a Trump rally, so they were still wearing their pro-Trump t-shirts and hats. The employees refused to serve the kids milkshakes.

Just over a week ago, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders went to a restaurant in Maryland with family members and had to leave. The owner took a vote among the staff and refused to serve the family. The owner and some other people then rallied to protest Sanders' family eating at a restaurant across the street. Sanders had left by then.

As the political divide continues to grow, it seems as though a new segregation is emerging. It wouldn't be surprising if, in the near future, Republicans and Democrats will had separate water fountains.
