Residents Make Grizzly Discovery Inside Broken Elevator

The elevator in an apartment complex had been out of service for some time, so residents started getting curious when they noticed a strange smell coming from its direction. When they investigated, they found something extremely unsettling.

An elderly man died a horrible death in the elevator after it broke down. The man pushed the emergency button and called for help but he was ignored. A month later, someone finally checked the elevator and found the man's decomposing body.

Police in Denver, Colorado are investigating to find out how an elderly man was left to die in an apartment complex elevator. The elevator in Woodstream Village apartments broke down a month ago with the elderly resident inside. No one bothered to do anything about it until neighbors began complaining of the smell a month later.

The last inspection of the elevator was in 2016 and it was found to be in good working order. It wasn't due for another inspection until next year.

Isaak Komisarchik, an 82-year-old man, was reported missing on July 5. He was last seen in gray pajamas heading to his mailbox. He also stopped at his building's office to get some things, and was not heard from again.

Komisarchik's daughter, Yelena, says the trail went cold and it was like her father just disappeared. The elderly man was suffering from dementia and the family feared that he had wandered off in a daze. The family began hunting for the missing senior citizen, posting fliers all over the city.

It turned out, Komisarchik never left the building. He went back into the elevator and it broke down on its way back up to his floor. He pushed the emergency button that is supposed to alert the elevator management company, twice, but it was ignored. Police say no one responded to the emergency call. The company thought the elevator was inoperable because of a renovation in the garage area.

"The pushing of the call button did trigger a notification to the elevator management company, MEI Total Elevator Solutions. The elevator management company then notified the apartment managers, Greystar Management Services," said Doug Schepman, a spokesperson for the Denver police, to CNN. "Staff did check two elevators in response to the notification but not the inoperable elevator, in which his body was found."

The man's body remained in the elevator for a month. People in the building began complaining of a foul odor and the building manager went to check. That's when he found Komisarchik's decomposing body.

The elevator company issued an apology. "We are saddened by the tragic loss of life and extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Komisarchik's family and friends," read a statement from Greystar Management Services. "The elevator cab where he was found is located in a parking garage that is under renovation construction and not currently in active use. We are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident with the local authorities."
