Researchers Issue Warning - Pregnant Women Shouldn't Take Tylenol

A recent report published in JAMA Pediatrics, suggests that pregnant mothers should steer clear of Tylenol and other over-the-counter and prescribed pain medications. According to Independent Journal Review, the study found that prenatal exposure to acetaminophen has been linked to ADHD and hyperactivity in kids.

Children exposed to acetaminophen when their mother was 18 weeks pregnancy had a higher chance of being hyperactive, according to the study. Children with exposure at 32 weeks showed higher chances of emotional symptoms, hyperactivity and conduct problems.

Despite what the study says, acetaminophen —which also goes by the name paracetamol— is recommended on sites like WebMD, Mayo Clinic, and Fit Pregnancy for pregnant mothers. Scientists, however, say that more research has to be done and no direct link between acetaminophen and ADHD were actually found.

"The takeaways here are that physicians should not change clinical practice until definitive prospective research is done and, most importantly, patients should not be frightened away from the many benefits of acetaminophen,” Dr. Hal C. Lawrence, CEO of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists told CNN.

Though the causes of ADHD are complicated a researcher says Tylenol may or may not play a factor.

"This is actually the fourth major study to find acetaminophen use during pregnancy associated with neurodevelopment of the child," Professor Michele Marcus of Emory University said. "The evidence is unmistakable that exposures that do no harm to adults can be harmful to the developing fetus and child."
