Rebecca Ferguson Willing To Sing At Trump’s Inauguration - But She Has One Condition

With President Elect Donald Trump's inauguration creeping up, the most unpopular election winner of all time is still having trouble lining up talent. Many celebrities have vowed to boycott the event, probably because their lips are still puckered from all the sour grapes they've been sucking since the election. One celebrity has volunteered her vocal chords, but she has a condition, and it's a deal breaker.

British pop star Rebecca Ferguson says she was invited to perform at the inauguration. She says she agreed on one condition: she gets to sing the controversial 1930's racism protest song, "Strange Fruit."

The song was initially made famous by the blues singer Billie Holiday. The controversial song sings about the treatment of black people in the southern U.S. It was blacklisted by record labels, though Holiday sang it at live performances.

Ferguson tweeted her response: "I've been asked and this is my answer. If you allow me to sing "strange fruit" a song that has huge historical importance, a song that was blacklisted in the United States for being too controversial. A song that speaks to all the disregarded and down trodden black people in the United States. A song that is a reminder of how love is the only thing that will conquer all the hatred in this world, then I will graciously accept your invitation and see you in Washington. Best Rebecca X"

With lyrics that sing of black bodies swinging from poplar trees in the southern breeze, it's unlikely that the song is going to happen.
