This Puppy Was Found In An Airport Bathroom With A Heartbreaking Note

While it is no secret that people who experience domestic abuse are often in serious danger, the story of a 3-month-old puppy named Chewy has highlighted another victim of domestic violence: pets. A traveler was shocked when they found Chewy in a McCarran Airport bathroom after he was abandoned by his owner. While many thought that Chewy’s owner abandoned him for selfish reasons, a note attached to Chewy’s collar revealed a darker truth.

The devastating, handwritten note left behind with Chewy revealed that his previous owner was in an abusive relationship. The note read:

“Hi! I’m Chewy! My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn’t afford me to get on the flight. She didn’t want to leave me with all her heart, but she has no other option. My ex-boyfriend kicked my dog when we were fighting and he has a big knot on his head. He probably needs a vet. I love Chewy sooo much-please love and take care of him.”

Despite the tragic circumstances which led to Chewy’s abandonment, Chewy was safely transported to local dog rescue center known as ‘Connor and Millie’s Dog Rescue’ (CMDR), and appears to be in great health. Not only is Chewy growing up to be an adorable and playful pup, he has also developed a huge fan base of people wishing to adopt him.

In a recent Facebook post, the owners of CMDR were ecstatic at the response they received after putting Chewy up for adoption, stating “There has been tremendous interest in little Chewy!!! We are compiling all the interest forms and will be going through them all. CMDR would like to say thank you for all the offers of a loving home.” However, the owners and workers at CMDR know that Chewy can only go to one loving family and have had to put applications of interest on hold. With shelters across the country being at maximum capacity, CMDR have encouraged non-successful applicants to “consider the hundreds, if not thousands of ‘Chewys’ loaded with love that are desperately seeking homes in shelters which are at max capacity, rescues are full!”

Sadly, Chewy’s abandonment is not an isolated incident, with countless pet owners struggling in abusive relationships. Given the tumultuous circumstances, more often than not, a pet will end up abandoned or put in shelters purely because their owner has no other option. Thankfully, individuals such as Staci Columbo Alonso, have established organizations such as ‘Noah’s Animals Rescue’, which provides a boarding facility on the grounds of the largest women and children’s shelter in Nevada. This allows for sufferers of abuse to ensure their pets do not have to be rehomed or abandoned while they try to get back on their feet.

“The animal is equally a member [of] the family as anyone else and its vital that when you’re leaving a domestic violence situation that your pet can come too,” spokeswoman Lori Nelson from Noah’s Animal Rescue stated. Both Noah’s Animal Rescue and Connor and Millie’s associates hope that the incredible demand for Chewy could give other sufferers of abuse the bravery to leave their partner without fear of losing their pet for good.
