Protestors Attempt To Block The Road - Police Show Them Why That Was A Bad Idea

Protests across the country on inauguration day last week often turned hostile and violent. In Portland, Oregon, police employed aggressive crowd-control tactics and arrested six people. Now, protesters in Portland are planning a protest against police for their handling of the demonstrations.

Activists in Portland believe the police were too heavy-handed on Friday night. Police controlled the crowd with sting-ball grenades (painful, but not lethal, rubber pellets), pepper spray and flash bang grenades to keep the rowdy crowds in line.

In response to the tactics used by police, protests were planned for Wednesday. "Since the mayor isn't going to stand for us, we're going to stand for ourselves and we're going to stand everywhere," activist Jacob Bureros told The Oregonian/OregonLive.

Protesters are planning to gather secretly in small groups on Wednesday, then to come forward and block traffic on various downtown streets.

Police defend their behavior on Friday. They point to the much larger Women's march on Saturday, which drew 100,000 people, as an example of a peaceful protest. The police did not need to utilize the same crowd-control techniques that Friday's protests warranted.

"As always, the Bureau supports free speech events and would remind organizers that marches or demonstrations occurring in public streets that restrict movement of other community members do require a permit issued by the City of Portland to allow for the safety of all," said Portland Police Bureau spokesman Pete Simpson.
