Protesters Block Highway - Don't Realize What They've Done

One family was fearing for their child’s life as they tried to rushed to the hospital but were halted after getting stuck in traffic during a Black Live Matter protest blocked the I-40 bridge in Memphis.

The bridge was shut down for several hours by protesters who started their march downtown and ended up on the bridge. The family was on their way to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital when they realized they were stuck on the bridge, according to FOX13.

They were concerned that their son’s condition might worsen, so they called an ambulance. Paramedic Bobby Harrell and his team picked up the boy and took a detour through West Memphis onto I-55 to make their way to the hospital for treatment.

"We were escorted by the Crittenden County Sheriff's Office up the wrong way on the interstate to pick up the child out of the traffic," Harrell told FOX13.

Though the boy was stable throughout the duration of the transport, Harrell said his condition could have gotten worse if the ambulance wasn’t called. Harrell has been on the job for more than 30 years. Though he never expects to have an easy night and has tended to lots of accidents on that bridge, he’s never seen anything before like he saw that night.

"Every call is different, and you just have to do what you have to do get your patient safely and get them out of harm’s way," Harrell told FOX13.
