New Principal Suspends Nearly Half The Student Body To Teach A Lesson On Attendance

It’s no secret that schools across the nation have some serious problems, but administrators often find that their hands are tied when it comes to shaking things up too much in a bid to correct things. Lisa Love recognized that some things needed to change when she took over as principal of Harrisburg High School earlier this year, and she decided to rock the boat in a very big way to make it happen.

As Fox News Insider shares, her controversial decision has not gone over too well with some parents.

Love recognized that the school had a major problem with truancy, and that was leading to all sorts of other problems. She decided she was going to really shake the trees in a bid to eradicate the problem.

Love issued suspension notices for the biggest offenders, and that turned out to be a staggering amount of the student population at the school. All told, nearly half of the school’s 1,100 students were issued notices.

"The problem I've noticed here as principal is that students are coming to school but they are not going to classes when they get here," she said. "Many parents send their kids to school and they're thinking they're going to class. I needed to reach out because of the enormous number not going to class."

She acknowledges that her decision is a bit controversial, but she felt it was the best course of action to affect some much-needed change.

"This was a hard decision for me to make, but I had to get the attention of the community to let them know that we are here,” she continued. “And we're about to do some wonderful things for students and the community and we want this to be a school that everyone is proud of. And this was probably the eye opener we needed to make that happen."

As you can imagine, not all parents are on board with the principal’s version of tough love.

"What does that teach them?" said one parent. "They've got senior projects to do."

Alright. Perhaps it teaches the kids to get to school on time and stay put for the rest of the school day. If the projects are so important to students and parents, then it’s not too much to ask for the students to follow the rules of the school.

"In order for us to get different results, we have to do something different," noted Superintendent Sybil Knight-Burney. "We can't do the same ol' same ol' and then complain about it when we're getting the same ol' results."

The superintendent is spot-on with her reasoning. If you’re not getting results with the way things are going, it’s time to re-examine things and zero in on the problems that are impeding your progress.

After that assessment is completed, it’s time to take action to improve things. That’s true in business, life, and even school. While some parents may be aggrieved with Love’s decision, it may prove to be a valuable life lesson for their sons and daughters in the long run.
