Pregnant Woman Mows Down Would-Be Thief With SUV - Both Face Charges

When you're the victim of a crime, it's natural to want to catch the criminal who stole from you. However, in doing so, be careful that you don't end up with a record yourself. When it’s a hot day, and you’ve got a hot temper, you might be tempted to do something rash. One pregnant mom got a little too hot-headed after a petty theft in a Walmart parking lot, and she's facing charges just like the suspect.

Christine Braswell, a pregnant woman from North Carolina, left her car in an Asheville Walmart's parking lot and went into the store to do some shopping. Someone noticed a man going into her car and rifling through her purse.

“When I walked out of Walmart, he had her purse and was pulling all of her stuff out,” witness Blake Bennett told WLOS. Bennett and his friend approached the man, asked him what he was doing and told him to put down the lady's purse.

The suspect, who was later identified as Robert Raines, had made a mess of Braswell's stuff when she came out of the store. Raines tried to run away with Branswell’s purse, and the 26-year-old mother-to-be gave chase on foot at first. At five months’ pregnant, she realized this wasn't the greatest idea.

Then Braswell got another idea. She hopped into her SUV and chased after the culprit in her car. Someone filmed as Braswell drove over the median, headed straight for Raines and hit him. The shocking video shows the riveting car chase, including the moment that Braswell plows into Raines. Onlookers were stunned.

“She slammed on her breaks, crammed it in reverse, and run over the median over there in between and hit him in the back," said one woman on the scene. "He was running, and she just flat hit him."

“He was with my purse and he took off and I took off after him,” Braswell said to WLOS. “Me being five months pregnant, I chased a little way then come back, jumped in the car, threw it in gear and come across the curb and ran him over.”

“I was not going to let him get away with it. It’s not right, it’s not fair,” she added indignantly.

Raines was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries sustained in the crash. Onlookers say blood was running down both of his arms, but according to reports, he didn’t suffer any serious injuries and he was released from the hospital into police custody. He's been charged with felony breaking and entering, larceny, and damage to property because he broke Braswell's iPad screen and broke her phone.

Braswell isn't off the hook, though. She's been charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon. She seems unapologetic for taking a stand against the alleged criminal, but had she injured the purse snatcher more seriously, or killed him, she could have been in even more trouble. A stolen purse isn’t worth a baby growing up with a mom behind bars.
