Potentially Innocent Man Sentenced to 28 Years in Prison May Finally Get A Break

In 1988, Clarence Moses-EL was sentenced to 28 years in prison for raping and assaulting a woman after she came home from a night of drinking.

The woman had already named a man who later confessed. Yet, while in the hospital, she said Moses-EL's face came to her in a dream--that's when she identified him as her attacker. Moses-EL has long pleaded innocence. He was left defenseless when Denver police threw away DNA evidence.

His only break came in 2013 when L.C. Jackson sent him a letter. Jackson said he could not believe Moses-EL was accused of raping the woman because Jackson "had sex" with her during the same time of night.

Jackson also wrote, "I really don't know what to say to you, but let's start by bringing what was done in the dark into the light. I have a lot on my heart." After the letter, a hearing was held in July.

Jackson testified that he became angry during sex and hit the woman in the face. In 1992, DNA evidence led to his conviction in the 1992 rapes of a mother and daughter that took place about a mile and a half away from the first woman's home. Records show that he is in prison.

Moses-EL's attorney, Gail Johnson, said, "He's elated. He's very happy and feels like he's finally getting justice in this case." Prosecutors are now reviewing the ruling and will meet with the victim.
