Popstar Suffers Shocking Injury

If you were old enough to watch television in the 1970s, chances are you remember gathering around an old set and adjusting your rabbit ears for popular prime-time variety shows. One show you might have caught was 'Tony Orlando and Dawn', a variety show starring then-popstar Orlando, Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson. Orlando recently suffered a home accident that resulted in losing a fingertip, but the 70s icon says he's okay.

The group 'Tony Orlando and Dawn' had several pop hits in the 70s, including the famous songs, 'Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree' and 'Knock Three Times'. The group was given their own CBS variety show of the same name, which ran from 1974 to 1976. In addition to a few more hits under their belt, the show would have guest stars, comedy skits and pop-music performances throughout its run.

The 73-year-old celebrity was in his home in Missouri when he had an accident with a garage door. He got his hand caught in the mechanism and it ended up chopping off the top part of the middle finger on his left hand - ouch!

Orlando's son John was not there for the accident, but he talked to TMZ about it and relayed some of the details. John said his dad, true to character, was cool, calm and collected in the aftermath of the bloody accident. After chopping part of his finger off, he picked it up off the floor and drove himself to the hospital with it.

Orlando was always a suave one, but wow!

Orlando later passed on some pictures of his mangled stump, with the finger severed just below the nail. Surgeons attempted to re-attach the tip of the finger, but there have been no reports on whether that operation was a success. Either way, it doesn’t look like Mr. Orlando will be using his left hand to flip anyone the bird anytime soon.

The jokes rolled out about Orlando 'tying a yellow bandage' around his hand, and not being able to 'knock three times' on the garage door after such a painful accident. The crooner has reportedly remained in good spirits, but with those kinds of puns floating around, that could change.

Born Michael Anthony Orlando Cassavitis, Orlando had his first hit, 'Halfway to Paradise', in 1961 when he was just 16 years old. He joined 'Dawn' in the 1970s, which later became 'Tony Orlando and Dawn'.

'Tie a Yellow Ribbon' has become a fixture in American pop culture. The song is about someone who has 'done his time' returning home, but he wasn't sure if he'd be welcome. He sent a letter ahead telling his lover to put a ribbon on the oak tree if she still wants him. By the time he arrives, there are a hundred ribbons around the tree.

The song was based on a folk tale about a Union soldier who was a prisoner of war, returning home to his lady love from a POW camp. As Orlando's recording became popular, people began tying yellow ribbons on trees for their loved ones in the military deployed overseas.
