Pop Star In Hot Water After Claiming This Ended Her Music Career

Years ago, a singer thought she had finally hit the big time. Her dance-pop single 'I Wanna Be Bad' from her first album, 'Willa Was Here', peaked at number 22 on Billboard's Hot 100. At the time, in 2001, she was being compared to other pop starlets such as Brittany Spears, Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson. She was all ready to follow it up, but she chose an unfortunate date to release her next song.

"A lot of people don't realize this, but my second single was released on September 11, 2001," Willa Ford told Billboard. "Everything that happened that day froze; the world stood still, as it should have. My second single didn't do well because anything that launched that day kind of got canned."

Terrorist attacks on U.S. soil weren't the only thing that foiled Ford's career advancement. After the unnoticed release of her second single, turmoil at record companies, including a take-over and an overturning of management, left the singer in limbo. She says she had to walk away because there was just too much going on.

“I really took a step back because I felt like I wasn’t doing what I was supposed to be doing at the time,” the 36-year-old singer tells Billboard. “I know that sounds crazy, but it was the perfect storm, and I walked away. It’s really hard when you walk away to go back to it.”

Ford put her music career on hold and pursued a career in interior design instead. But instead of looking back at what might have been, she's shrugging it off and is trying to move forward. She says there's a possibility that she might revive her music career.

“I’d love to hit the gay club circuit because it would be so empowering and fun every night,” she told Billboard. “I miss being on the road more than any of it.”

In the interview, Billboard notes that even with only one hit single from 17 years ago, Ford still has a pretty big fan base.

"I’m so grateful," the singer responded. "So many of them are my loving gays -- they’re my ride or dies. I’ve had so many guys be like, 'Listen, I figured out I was gay because I realized from your music videos I didn’t want to screw you -- I wanted to be you'."

Ford has also dipped her toes in acting. Ten years ago, she played Anna Nicole Smith in the biopic 'The Anna Nicole Smith Story'. Ford was also in the film 'Friday the 13th' in 2009 and in 'Submerged' in 2016. She’s made a number of appearances on television and in music videos as well, keeping her name and face in the game, so a comeback may not be out of the question for the gorgeous Ford.

She says if she released another record, she would like it to be a pop-dance club record with remixes, and she'd love to work with other up-and-coming stars.

Aside from club music, she also loves country. "I went to Nashville for a while and did some writing. People were like, 'You’re Willa Ford. You grew up on a farm. Why are you not doing a country record?' That’s the only other kind of record I would make, and that would be for myself," she said.
