Police Standby At Black Lives Matter Protest - Situation Takes Unexpected Turn

Instead of fighting over hashtags, residents and police departments across the country are looking to create real change in an effort to improve police-community relations, and more than 1,000 people came to party together in Wichita, Kansas at the “First Steps Cookout.”

"Very good vibe. Very good vibe,” Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay, told KWCH. “It's everything I was hoping for,"

Though more than 400 people pledged to attend on social media, more than double that number showed up.

Black Lives Matter’s community leaders had planned a protest for that Sunday night, but agreed to cancel it and attend the barbecue instead after speaking with Ramsay. The Wichita Police Department served up free food to the community and held one-on-one conversations with them.

During a Q&A session at the event with Ramsay, some voiced their frustrations with the police department. Others said that the cookout was an attempt to take away from the true causes of tension between the community and its police department.

"This isn't something we're going to change overnight or tonight," Ramsay told KWCH. "It's just going to take continual effort on everybody's part. And work on policy changes, relationships. And that's what's going to get to the heart of the issues."
