Police Officer's Widow Blasts Nike for Kaepernick Campaign in Open Letter

Nike has sparked a lot of controversy by making ex-NFL player Colin Kaepernick the face of their company. It has a lot of former Nike customers vowing to never buy another Nike product again. One police officer's widow wrote an open letter to the company about why their choice was terribly inappropriate, and it's been going viral.

Sherry Graham-Potter thought life was going her way. She was a single mom who just married Sheriff’s Deputy Tim Graham. He treated her kids like his own and the family had just settled into a happy life together. She and her husband had just celebrated their one month wedding anniversary and thought everything was going well.

Then one night, Graham didn't come home. Instead, officers came to tell Graham-Potter that her husband was trying to detain an emotionally disturbed man on a highway and was hit by oncoming traffic. He died in the street.

The accident happened in 2005, and Graham-Potter has worked through her grief and gone on with her life. In the last couple of years, Kaepernick has stirred up a firestorm by kneeling for the national anthem in protest of police brutality and systemic racism.

When he opted not to renew his contract with the San Francisco 49ers and became a free agent, no other teams wanted to pick him up because they didn’t want to deal with the controversy. In light of this, some view Kaepernick as kind of martyr who stood up for what he believed.

Others, even if they support his right to protest, feel his protests were misplaced when he performed them on the job.

While she thinks Kaepernick has every right to protest whatever he wants, she thinks Nike is 'terribly, terribly wrong' for painting him as a hero.

Graham-Potter explains that after months of being in a zombie-like state of grief, she found a black Nike hat, and began to run.

" I put that hat on and I ran every day. Sometimes I had to stop and sit down because I was sobbing so hard. Sometimes I was so angry I ran until I thought I my heart would stop, sometimes I would just scream over and over again, but it still felt better than doing nothing," she explains. "That black cap became a symbol to me, it is sweat stained and it’s shape is gone, the buckle in the back barely closes; but that hat represents my family’s rise from the ashes."

Graham-Potter doesn't think Kaepernick, who has been painted as a hero by some because of his refusal to stand for the national anthem, is the best choice of spokespeople.

"What, exactly has Colin Kaepernick sacrificed? His multimillion dollar paycheck…? Nope, you already gave him one of those. His reputation? No, he’s been fawned over by celebrities and media alike," she writes.

"This man, whose contempt for law enforcement fits him like a…sock, has promoted an agenda that has been proven false time and time again, in study after study," she continues. "...This man has thrown his support behind divisive anti-police groups, and donated money directly to a fugitive from justice who escaped prison after killing a police officer."
