Police Officer Responds to Man Who Says His Groceries Were Stolen; Then Offers to Replace Them

Some police officers go above and beyond the call of duty, and when they do it can be a real tear-jerker. One Texas officer responding to a call from a Walmart parking lot proved how cops can be heroes in more ways than one. A man reported that his groceries were stolen, and the officer offered to buy him more.

Officer Kirsten Koryciak in Houston wasn't officially on duty, but she had picked up an extra shift at Walmart last week to make a little extra money. She was patrolling the parking lot when she ran into a 'groggy looking' man.

The man told the officer he was diabetic and he suffered from a blood sugar episode. The man had just finished shopping and had just left the store. He had to call EMS to help tend to him, but while he was getting treated, someone stole his groceries.

Koryciak and the man spoke for a while, and he seemed distraught. The man was on a fixed budget. He couldn't afford another round of groceries, but he had to eat. With diabetes, if he didn't get his proper nutrition, it could result in a very serious health crisis.

Koryciak couldn't just let the man go home to starve, so she offered to pay for some food. Her own father suffers from Type 1 Diabetes, so the officer understands the struggles of people with the disease, and how life-threatening it can be if diabetics don't have access to nutritious foods and the proper medications.

“I offered to buy his groceries to get him some food, because he was diabetic and I knew he needed to eat,” the officers told reporters at a press conference.

The two went back into the store and Koryciak bought the man things such as oatmeal, lettuce and other vegetables. The tab was around $25, which she paid out of her own pocket.

“I just didn’t want to see that young man suffering,” the officer said when asked why she helped the man. “It’s part of my job to care about people.”

The officer understands how it can be when someone is down on his luck, so she just wanted to help.

“He wasn’t having a great day. He wasn’t feeling good,” Koryciak said. “If you see somebody being mistreated or taken advantage of, say something. You have to treat people like they were your own family… how you want to be treated.”

People are praising the young officer for her kindness, and she deserves it. But we should also remember that police officers do things like this all the time.

Across the country, in Gainesville, Florida, an officer responded to a robbery last November. A disabled senior citizen had just bought his monthly grocery load with all of his necessities. The man was robbed when he got off the bus.

The officer took the police report, and then went to the local grocery store to replace all the things that were stolen. The disabled man was extremely grateful for the officer’s kindness because he had no idea how he was going t survive the month.
