Police Officer Of 22 Years Fired After Her Neighbor Filed A Complaint About What She Had In Her Yard (Photos)

A police officer in Georgia flew the Confederate flag on her private property. Someone called to complain and she was fired. She's now fighting the termination.

Former Police Sergeant Silvia Cotriss proudly flew the Confederate battle flag below the American flag on her own private property. The flags had been up for more than a year, and the officer never received any complaints. When a woman passed by her house and noticed the controversial banner and the patrol car parked in the driveway, she started complaining.

The woman was a parishioner of a local African-American church. Police Chief Rusty Grant had recently visited the church in an attempt to ease tense relationships between police and African-Americans. The woman called Pastor Lee Jenkins, and Jenkins called Grant.

The Office of Professional Standards investigated, and the conclusion was that the officer should be terminated.

“People have a First Amendment right to fly a flag on their own property, but when you have a government-issued vehicle out front, that’s highly offensive and inappropriate,” Jenkins said.

Cotriss, who feels the flag represents her Southern history, says when she first heard about the complaint she removed it. She was stunned, however, when she was terminated for it.

“Police officers have to adjust a lot of things in our lives, and for 20 years my whole life has been about making change and being held to a higher standard," Cotriss said. "We take an oath to help and protect people, so we can’t have a private life that’s really bad.”
