Police Find This Inside Homeless Man's Pockets

In Slidell, Louisiana, it is legal to beg for money. Yet, there are still some issues and complaints. For example, 59-year-old Franklin Jones is homeless. Last Tuesday, Jones got drunk and stumbled onto the road. He then stole a shopping basket and urinated on the street. That's when a mother and child saw him. The women instantly called police, and Jones was arrested for public urination. Jones had been begging for money at the intersection of Gause and Interstate 10 for over a year. When Jones' was arrested, the police found $800 in his pocket. In a Facebook post, the Slidell Police Department wrote:

“There is no easy answer to this. We continue to offer help, but when you can make $800 in less than a week by ‘begging’, some people say, ‘Why get a real job?’ … Bottom line is, it’s up to the individual person if they want help or not. No matter what action we take, some will agree and some will disagree. It is what it is. ... There is no easy solution to this problem, and quite frankly, it is a much bigger and deeper issue than a strictly a [sic] police matter. We hope this sheds some light for our Slidell residents and hopefully answered any questions or concerns about this issue."
