Police Come Under Fire For What They Were Caught Doing To Homeless Man

Police in Cheyenne, Wyoming arrested a drunken panhandler recently, and they offered up a public service announcement on social media in the wake of that. The Cheyenne Police Department’s post quickly went viral. As the Daily Mail shares, many commenters blasted the department for arresting the man.

“Yesterday, July 22, we arrested a transient for public intoxication. This is a person we frequently deal with, but we want to illustrate that there are better ways to help the transient population than to give them money for panhandling,” the department shared. “This person collected $234.94 in just a few hours of asking for money. Rather than feeding someone's alcohol addiction, you can donate directly to local charities such as the Comea Shelter where your money will assist the homeless in a much more effective way.”

Seems simple enough. They deal with the guy all the time. They’re asking the public for some help so perhaps he gets off the streets. Maybe he’ll get himself some real help as opposed to begging for others hard-earned dollars as a result. Not everyone saw it that way, and the department received a ton of backlash.

“I'm sure you guys are going to take every dollar he had, and not give it back to him,” shared one user.

“The way I see it, the people GAVE it to him. That's HIS money. A bunch of thieves I tell ya,” added another user.

“Arrested him for walking while drunk? Would it be better if people drove drunk? Bigger fish to fry out there. This is lame,” chimed in another commenter.

“He's not scaming [sic] the public. No one forces anyone to give. It's no one else's business if a person chooses to give to a panhandler. You don't like it. Don't give. Simple as that. Otherwise MYOB,” according to another commenter.

Other users are having a hard time seeing where the cops are in the wrong here, and they’re shaking their heads vigorously at all the outrage this simple situation has created.

“This is what the liberals have created,” wrote one user. “A man breaks the law, scams people, and yet the cops are the bad guys. I wish you all could spend a day or two in the line of duty and see how you feel about the police then.”

Things got so out of hand that CPD had to offer up some additional details on why the man was arrested.

“The person arrested was arrested for public intoxication, having an open container of alcohol, urinating in public and refusing to obey commands,” the department wrote.

That certainly sounds like someone that needs to be off of the streets. While it does sound like the man needs a lot of help right about now, he has other options out there, namely the aforementioned shelter that the cops pointed out to the public. Continually dropping cash in his lap may seem like the right thing to do, but the reality is vastly different.
