Pizza Shop Employee Fired After Writing Racial Slur on Order Board

A man in North Carolina is out of a job after Domino's Pizza fired her. The cashier didn't get a customer's name, so he decided to improvise and used the N-word in place of it. The customer noticed her order on the board next to the racial slur, and was furious.

Myasia Nelson went into the Domino's in Burlington on Monday night to order two pizzas and a side of wings. She checked the order board to see how much longer it would be, however instead of her name she saw the cashier had written 'NIGA' in the name field.

Nelson complained to a manager, and the employee was questioned about the use of the N-word. The male employee, whose name has not been released, said that he meant no offense by writing NIGA, he simply couldn't understand what Ms. Nelson was saying when he asked her name. Since he couldn't spell her name, he just typed in random letters. He claims he had no ill intent.

Nelson doubted that it was just a simple mistake. She said the cashier had only asked for her name once, and her name doesn't sound like the letters he chose. She believes she is a victim of discrimination.

"Racial discrimination. That’s what I feel like it is because if it were anyone else they would have never done that," said Nelson to WFMY.

Domino's supervisor Junior Snyder fired the employee the next day. He said it didn't matter whether it was a mistake or intentional, it was an unacceptable thing to do nd did not reflect the values of the nation-wide pizza chain.

“You can’t work for your company,” Snyder said. “We’re not like that.”

Snyder has also personally apologized to Ms. Nelson, and he says that he's going to do everything he can to make sure nothing like this happens again. He plans to supplement his employees' training to 'make sure everyone understands we don't tolerate this'.

The Domino shop in question is an independently-owned franchise, but the corporate office agreed with Snyder's decision to terminate the employee. They even commended him for his quick action.

“As you might expect, this behavior is repulsive and intolerable and has no place in our brand,” Domino’s said in a statement to Newsweek. “There are more than 15,000 Domino’s units in 90 countries around the world – we are a diverse, inclusive brand and there is no tolerance for that behavior.”

Domino's offered Nelson a $50 gift card as a peace offering, but the woman turned it down. She feels that $50 is not worth what she had to endure. She feels that the experience was a profound one in her life, and that it was even more meaningful when she considered what these kinds of incidents mean for her children.

"I don’t want my daughter growing up being called the words that they wrote about me or being called any type of name,” she told WFMY.

With so many restaurants putting automated systems in place, this kind of thing has become more commonplace. Customers across the country have gone out for food or beverages, only to find the cashier left rude names or insults on the electronic order. Employees need to be aware that the momentary joke isn’t worth it because it’s a sure way to find yourself unemployed.
