Photo Of These Fifth-Grade Boys Handling Flag Has Gone Viral

Disrespecting the American flag seems to get a lot of attention these days. It even seems to get a lot of praise. It's not as common, but one photo went viral due to young boys treating Old Glory with care and respect. Their efforts have been inspiring people across the country.

Amanda Reallan was outside of Hayden Meadows Elementary School in Hayden, Idaho on Wednesday afternoon. Reallan was waiting to pick up her kids, but then she caught sight of something going on over by the flag pole.

She was completely touched and floored after watching three little boys taking down the American flag.

Two of the boys carefully held the flag by its ends and proceeded to carefully fold it, just as flag etiquette dictates. There was a little breeze, and one edge of the flag accidentally swooped down and nearly brushed the ground.

Another little boy scurried onto the ground, underneath the flag, just to make sure that if it slipped he could stop the star-spangled banner from hitting the pavement.

There were no adults around telling the boys that they needed to do this; the children weren’t even aware that someone was watching them. They just took their job very seriously.

Reallan was so amazed she snapped a photo and shared it on Facebook. "Wow! I just watched the most amazing act of Patriotism!" she wrote. "Was waiting to pick up my children from school when three boys took down the flag. They were having a hard time making sure it didn't touch the ground when the third boy laid under it to honor not letting it touch the ground!"

The post rapidly racked up views and comments and shares-- most of them positive. It wasn't long before the media got wind of it and tracked down the patriotic young men.

The boys were identified as Naylan Tuttle, Jack LeBreck, and Casey Dolan. They told KHQ, a local NBC News station, that they were chosen to handle the flag by 'Mr. Mac', the school's custodian, Mac McCarty.

McCarty is an Air Force veteran. His father and grandfather also served in the military, so he hand-selected the young boys for the job because he said they seemed to understand the importance of handling the flag with respect.

"This is our nation's flag, this is our school's flag, it's how we represent our country," LeBreck told KHQ. "If you let it touch the ground then you disrespect our country is what I heard."

"I think it would be very honorable for me, my dad and my grandfather, they've been in the service, in the military, so I probably think I would make them proud," added Tuttle.

"They did themselves proud, they did their families proud, they did our school proud and our community and I'm very proud of them and I'm sure their families are very proud of them as well," McCarty said.

"It was a beautiful act patriotism," said Reallan. "I was like 'wow that was just amazing.' I don't even know these boys honestly.”

“These boys had no idea I was taking the photo," Reallan later told USA Today. "They took it upon themselves to protect the flag."
