Photo of Man Who Left Officer Paralyzed from Neck Down Released by Police

On July 8, a Ballwin, Missouri police officer made what he thought was a routine traffic stop. He stopped a speeding driver and was processing the paperwork when the driver shot him in the neck. At press conferences recently held included his wife and Chief of Police.

The bullet that hit Officer Mike Flamion's neck during the traffic stop ambush by 31-year-old Antonio Taylor severed the officer's spinal cord. He's alive, but he'll be paralyzed for the rest of his life.

“Officer Flamion has so dedicatedly served the Ballwin community, and he is forever deserving of our long-term support,” said Police Chief Kevin Scott. “Although it is evident he will not be able to serve in the same capacity, I will assure you that Officer Flamion is ingrained in the Ballwin police family and will forever be a Ballwin police officer, no questions asked.”

Sarah Flamion also appeared to speak about her husband and to thank the police force and community for their support. “The support is overwhelming. Every day I’m at the hospital. There’s Ballwin police officers, police officers from other municipalities, county, the police wives. There’s so many people wanting to help anyway they can. It is an overwhelming feeling but it is a great feeling," said Sarah.

A Go Fund Me campaign is attempting to raise $250,000 for the lifetime of intensive care Flamion will need.

Chief Scott says the department is currently working on strategies to help ensure officer safety at traffic stops.
