Petition Calls For Full Honors Military Funeral For JROTC Student Who Died In Shooting

One student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School may not have officially been in the military, but the 15-year-old boy died a hero's death. Instead of saving himself, the JROTC student tried to help his fellow students escape when a gunman entered the school and opened fire.

A petition has been started at the WhiteHouse.gov website to request the student be given a military funeral.

According to students who survived the tragic school shooting in Parkland, Florida last week, they owe their lives to a fellow student who didn't make it. Peter Wang, instead of running through the doors to get out of the line of fire, stopped to hold them open, urging his classmates to hurry and get to safety.

Wang, a JROTC member, was in uniform on the day of the shooting, and died in that uniform. There isn't much consolation when a 15-year-old child is killed in a fit of violence, but his family, friends and members of his community are proud of Wang's selflessness and bravery.

He died with honor.

“He is so brave. He is the person who is genuinely kind to everyone. He doesn’t care about popularity. He always liked to cheer people up. He is like the big brother everyone wished they had,” said Wang's cousin to the Sun-Sentinel.

“He was a JROTC Cadet who was last seen, in uniform, holding doors open and thus allowing other students, teachers, and staff to flee to safety. Wang was killed in the process,” reads a petition on the White House website.

“His selfless and heroic actions have led to the survival of dozens in the area. Wang died a hero, and deserves to be treated as such, and deserves a full honors military burial,” the petition continued.

It needs 100,000 signatures to get attention from Washington, and so far, has garnered around 25,000.

The petition is calling for a military funeral, with full honors, for the young man. While it's not considered possible to bury a civilian with honors, many people are pushing for Wang's funeral to be the first.

Users on the social media platform, Reddit, are rallying the troops, literally, in hopes of giving the young man a large military presence at his funeral, which is scheduled for Friday afternoon.

“Peter embodied the Army values and he was our brother,” said one of the organizers on Reddit.

The family has requested service members to come pay their respects in uniform, and for those who cannot come to send military unit patches and unit challenge coins.

Redditors are also trying to get an official honor guard for the funeral. The family says that the JROTC unit at the school plans to serve as honor guard.

On GoFundMe, people touched by Wang's story have been sending donations to the family. The family says the donations will go in his name to the school's JROTC unit.

Wang’s father, mother and two younger siblings are too grief-stricken to give any interviews at this time. They own a restaurant in Florida and were planning on a big family celebration of the Chinese New Year this week, but instead they will be holding the funeral for their child.
