Parents Visit Doctor To Determine Sex Of Baby, Doctor Has Other Terrifying News To Tell Them

Having a safe, complication-free childbirth is a miracle in its own right but when Alyssa Reidhead successfully brought her child into the world with her husband, Ben Reidhead, it was a truly wondrous occasion. When Ben and Alyssa found out that they were going to be having a baby, they were understandable, ecstatic. However, in a tragic turn of events, while meeting with doctors about the unborn child’s sex, the happy parents were informed that their child likely had a rare neural tube defect known as encephalocele. From ultrasound imaging and other tests, doctors believed that Alyssa and Ben’s unborn child had several openings in his skull. Ben described the horrible day by saying: "We were going in for one of the happiest times of our lives and come out walking like we just heard the worst news we could’ve ever heard".

After a flurry of medical appointments and testing, doctors still advised Ben and Alyssa that their unborn child was not going to live long with Alyssa telling Fox Salt Lake City that "They just kept saying oh he’ll be born but he’ll only live for a couple minutes or if you go through with labor, he’ll probably pass away during labor". At the 23 week mark, doctors notified the exhausted parents-to-be that their unborn son’s brain was beginning to grow outside of his cranium. With no new ideas or forthcoming medical savior, Ben and Alyssa began the heart-rending task of planning the funeral of their son before he was even brought into the world, selecting a casket and doing some basic logistical planning.

As the due date drew closer and closer, Ben and Alyssa felt a confusing mixture of emotions with Ben saying they were "Almost scared of having the baby come not because we didn’t want him to come but just because we were afraid of losing him”. Finally, the baby, named Will, was delivered via C-section at Primary Children’s Hospital. In a stunning reversal of the odds, baby Will survived, breathing, moving and crying like a normal infant child. Doctors realized that they had been mistaken in their initial assessments and re-diagnosed the healthy baby with a rare disease known as cutis aplasia. Will and his parents will be faced with many challenges as a result of this disease as it means the back of the infant’s skull is missing and his brain is only protected by a thin membrane.

However, Ben and Alyssa are just grateful their son is alive and have begun consulting with doctors along with setting up a Go Fund Me page at https://www.gofundme.com/BabyWillReidhead to help with Will’s medical costs.
