Parents Go To Find Out Baby's Gender, Get Shocking News

A couple in Utah were very excited about their pregnancy, but during a routine ultrasound things took a turn for the worst. They were told their unborn child would probably not survive outside the womb, if he survived the pregnancy at all. Thankfully, the baby proved doctors wrong.

Ben and Alyssa Reidhead of Salt Lake City were devastated when doctors told them that their unborn son had a rare condition in which his brain was growing on the outside of his skull. Doctors told them to brace for the worst, as children with encephalocele usually die within minutes of being born. More likely, however, the doctors told them the child would die in the room, or wouldn't survive labor.

Things were so grim for the couple that before they even gave birth to their baby they were picking out a casket. "Almost scared of having the baby come not because we didn’t want him to come but just because we were afraid of losing him," said Ben.

The day finally came, and little Will was born. Shortly after the birth, the parents waited with baited breath to hear the bad news. Instead, they heard the most wonderful sound in the world.

"We heard a cry and that made me cry and him cry because we were like, ‘oh he’s crying,’" Alyssa said.

Will is missing the back of his skull. His brain is only covered by a thin membrane. However, he's got no intention of going anywhere.

"He’s not hooked up to anything. He’s breathing fine. He’s lifting his head. He’s moving around. He’s pretty much acting like a completely normal baby," said Alyssa.

The family is now taking it one day at a time, but they're very grateful that Will is a fighter who proved everyone wrong.
