Parents Arrested And Charged With Child Neglect For Outrageous Reason

Two parents were caught in traffic, which resulted in both of them getting arrested and charged with a felony for child neglect. The Florida family had both their 11-year-old and 4-year-old sons removed by police officers who were anonymously called when both parents were an hour and a half late getting home, due to bad traffic and rain. Authorities claim that the boys had no access to water, shelter or food.

Yet, the mother wrote, “My son was in his own yard playing basketball, not in the street or at the park." She also said that her son ate his snacks already, and that the responding officer found their yard good enough to relieve himself when they arrived. The boys spent two days in foster care, and then the parents arranged for the kids to stay with a relative. When the relative no longer wanted to care for the boys, Child Protective Services requested that they be placed back into foster care. The parents then had a court hearing where the 11-year-old asked to speak to the judge. The mother recalled:

“He went back there and spoke to the judge for about ten minutes. And then the judge came out and called the two lawyers to the bench and talked to them for about 10 or 15 minutes. And with that, our lawyer came to us and said that if we admitted that we didn't know that it was wrong to [let our son] stay in the backyard, but that we know now that it's wrong and we will never let it happen again, and that we will explain this to our son, he would let the children come with us.”

Unfortunately, the criminal prosecutor has not yet dropped the charges and the parents have to appear in criminal court to put in their plea.
