One Word From Mom Gets Her Banned From Charter School - Principal Demands Apology

Tempers will get the better of everyone from time to time, but most folks will do their best to keep things in check when there are kids around. If there’s ever a small slip-up, apologies abound and the red-faced tantrum thrower will typically not make the same mistake again. In a simple world, an apology is more than enough to show that you’re aware that you crossed the line and are remorseful about it. It’s not a simple world, however, and sometimes even more is required to make amends.

That’s the situation Latasha Battle found herself in. The mother-of-two was barred from the Success Academy of Cobble Hill in Brooklyn, NY, and she was concerned she wouldn’t be able to attend her son’s fourth-grade graduation as a result. Battle’s reason for being banned? She used the word ‘damn’ in front of children.

As the New York Daily News explains, the incident happened a few weeks ago. She was standing outside the school with her children, as well as other parents and their children, and it was pouring outside. The school has a strict rule about opening its doors at 7:35 a.m. sharp, and Battle was a little frustrated when they were finally allowed in.

“It’s a damn shame the school made these kids stand in the pouring rain,” she said.

Principal Brittany Davis-Roberti was not pleased. She fired off a nasty letter to Battle to inform her she wasn’t welcome in the school “until you schedule an appointment with me to apologize for your behavior and pledge that it will never happen again.”

Battle wasn’t given the option of taking a time-out instead, but Davis-Roberti was sure to throw in a sarcastic remark.

“We know you can also make the choice not to adhere and not to enroll your child at our school,” the letter continued.

Battle refused to apologize, and she’s had to pick up her children at the front of the school away from the other children. She was just going to deal with the principal’s hissy fit by not dealing with it, but she received word from the school security guards that they were told to call the police if she showed up at graduation. That led Battle to contact the New York Daily News, and she is now magically allowed to attend.

“I’m not going to apologize for anything,” Battle said. “I’m disgusted by this whole situation.”

Success Academy officials were reached for comment, and they actually defended the letter in question.

“When an adult frightens children and staff by screaming profanities, we absolutely support our principals in taking necessary steps to ensure a respectful, safe school environment,” according to spokeswoman Nicole Sizemore.

While that seems like a perfectly appropriate stance to take, it also sounds like Sizemore is taking substantial liberties with what happened. Perhaps Battle’s tone and demeanor were inappropriate, but the principal could have simply phoned her or pulled her to the side. There’s no need to amplify the situation with a nasty and sarcastic letter, so perhaps Sizemore and company can more closely examine the definition of ‘necessary steps.’
